Heating Your Home Safely in a Monmouth County Power Outage

When the power goes out in a Monmouth County winter, the safe heat is the heat already built to vent outside: a fireplace or wood stove with a clear flue, plus layers and one closed-off room. Anything that burns fuel and was not built into the house stays outside. That means generators, grills, camp stoves and outdoor propane heaters, with no exception for an open garage door.

The cold is what you notice. Carbon monoxide is the part that, in the EPA's words, can kill you before you are aware it is in your home. So this is in two halves: what to check this week while the power is on, and the rules that keep an outage from turning into a CO call.

Your gas furnace needs electricity too

About 77 percent of households in the 07728 area heat with natural gas, and roughly 3 percent still burn oil. Almost none of that matters in an outage. The gas is still in the line and the oil is still in the tank, but the control board, the igniter and the blower all run on house current. No power, no heat, whatever the fuel.

Two things to do before the next storm. First, find the furnace service switch and make sure everyone in the house can point at it. It looks like an ordinary light switch, usually red, mounted on the furnace itself or at the top of the basement stairs. After an outage, a furnace that will not restart is very often that switch, bumped in the dark. Second, look at how the furnace is vented. The flue pipe should be solidly connected, sloping upward, with no rust holes or foil tape patches. That pipe carries combustion gases out of the same basement where the family ends up when the heat quits.

Measure how fast your house actually loses heat

Most outage advice never tells you the one number that decides everything: how long your house stays livable without heat. You can measure it yourself on any cold night this winter, and it costs nothing.

  • Before bed, write down the indoor temperature and the outdoor temperature.
  • Turn the heat off, not down. Off.
  • Write both numbers down again eight hours later.
  • Divide the indoor drop by eight. That is your degrees per hour with the heat off.

Now you know something real. If the house gives up two degrees an hour on a 25 degree night, a 12 hour outage puts the living room in the low forties by morning, and it gets colder than 25 here. Freehold sits in IECC climate zone 4A with a winter design temperature of roughly 13 degrees, so plan against 13, not against the mild night you tested on. A house that drifts slowly can shelter in place. A house that drops fast needs somebody deciding where to go early in the day, not at 2 a.m.

Houses vary far more than people expect, and the gap is measurable. On a job in Medford, a blower door test read 4,460 CFM50 on about 2,200 square feet of conditioned space, an extremely leaky house. The duct runs sat in an uninsulated crawl space and an open mechanical chase ran from the first floor straight to the roof. The complaint that brought us out was summer: once it got above 90 outside, the house could not hold under 80 inside. Leakage that size is not seasonal, and your own drift number is how you find out which kind of house you are sitting in.

What never comes inside, no exceptions

The EPA is direct about generators: never use a portable generator inside homes, garages, crawlspaces, sheds or similar areas, because deadly levels of carbon monoxide build up quickly there and can linger for hours even after the generator has shut off. That last part is the one people miss. Shutting it off does not clear the air.

  • Portable generators: outdoors only, exhaust pointed away from the house, never in an attached garage even with the door up.
  • Charcoal and propane grills: never indoors for cooking or heat, and never in a garage.
  • Camp stoves and lanterns built for outdoor use.
  • Unvented kerosene and gas space heaters, which sit on the EPA's list of what puts carbon monoxide into homes.
  • The kitchen oven. The U.S. Fire Administration's rule is one line long: never use an oven to heat your home.

Learn the symptoms, because CO has no color and no smell. Headache, dizziness, nausea, and a flu-like heaviness that lifts after you leave the house and returns when you come back. The pattern matters more than any single symptom. If two people feel it at the same time, everyone goes outside first and you call from out there.

Space heaters and the three foot rule

Portable heaters are the default answer for a room or two, and they carry a number worth knowing. The U.S. Fire Administration reports that home portable heater fires were only 3 percent of home heating fires annually for 2017 to 2019, but accounted for 41 percent of the fatal ones. A small share of the fires, most of the deaths.

Two rules cover almost all of it. Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from all heat sources, including fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators, space heaters and candles. Turn space heaters off when you leave the room or go to bed. Three feet is further than it sounds, so pace it out in the room where the heater will actually run and count what falls inside that circle: blankets, curtains, the side of an upholstered chair. Move them now, not by flashlight.

Check the CO alarms before the storm, not during

An alarm that only plugs into the wall is dead the moment the power is. At least one in the house needs a battery. Walk around this week and do three things: press the test button on each one, check the back for the manufacture date and replace anything past the age the label states, and note which alarms show a number instead of only beeping.

The number is worth having, because there are figures to compare it to. The EPA reports average levels in homes without gas stoves at 0.5 to 5 parts per million, 5 to 15 ppm near properly adjusted gas stoves, and 30 ppm or higher near poorly adjusted ones. A digital alarm sitting well above the low single digits with the stove off is telling you something, and during an outage it is the difference between guessing and knowing.

In an outage the sources are the equipment already in the house: a furnace or a gas water heater back-drafting instead of venting, a fireplace or wood stove with a poor draft, the gas range, or a generator someone moved too close. Basements are standard in the mid-1960s split-levels and raised ranches around Stonehurst and Monmouth Heights, and that is exactly where the fuel-burning equipment and the family both end up when the power drops.

Which fireplaces actually work with no power

A wood stove or wood-burning insert needs no electricity at all. Gas is where it gets confusing. A gas fireplace with a standing pilot, the kind whose flame stays lit all summer, will usually light without house power. A unit with electronic ignition will not, and if it leans on a blower to push heat into the room, the blower is out too. Go settle the question now: standing pilot, electronic ignition with a battery compartment, or neither.

Whatever you have, the flue does the safety work. Open the damper before you light anything. The EPA lists fireplaces and wood stoves among the things that back-draft, so a blocked flue turns your one working heat source into the CO source. Wood stove doors need to close tightly, and an unswept chimney is not something to discover during a storm.

Do not forget the pipes

Heat loss and frozen pipes arrive together. Let the faucets on exterior walls trickle, open the cabinet doors under sinks so room air reaches the supply lines, and find the main water shutoff before you need it in the dark. If you leave the house during a multi-day outage, shutting that valve and draining the lines is cheaper than the drywall.

When it makes sense to call someone

Two moments justify a call. The first is a CO alarm sounding, a smell of exhaust, or anyone with a headache that clears up outdoors. Get out, then call. The second is after the power returns and the furnace will not restart, or starts and shuts down over and over, which is what furnace repair exists for.

The unglamorous prevention is annual service. The U.S. Fire Administration puts it plainly: maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected each year by a professional. That is what a heating system check-up is, someone reading combustion and venting before the weather tests it for you.

FAQ

Can I run a generator in the garage if I leave the door open?
No. The EPA says never to run one inside a home, garage, crawlspace or shed, because deadly carbon monoxide builds up quickly and lingers for hours after the generator shuts off. An open door does not fix it.

Will my gas furnace work during a power outage?
No. The gas line still has pressure, but the control board, igniter and blower need house power. Oil burners are in the same position. Only a generator wired in through a transfer switch by a licensed electrician changes that.

Can I heat the kitchen with the gas oven for a few hours?
No. The U.S. Fire Administration's guidance is to never use an oven to heat your home, and unvented gas burning is on the EPA's list of the ways carbon monoxide gets into houses.
