
The new furnace went in two years ago, or the new AC did, and the bedroom over the garage is still the one room nobody can get comfortable in. That is not bad luck with equipment. It is almost always the ductwork, still doing exactly what it did to the old system, because nobody measured it when the new one went in. A modern variable speed blower is far less forgiving of a restricted duct than the equipment it replaced, so a problem that was tolerable for thirty years suddenly is not. Novus Mechanical measures airflow and static pressure before recommending anything, and the diagnostic visit that finds the real cause is $150, up to $200 on a harder call.
Most comfort complaints that get blamed on equipment are duct problems wearing an equipment costume. A furnace or AC moves air, nothing more. If the pathway that air travels through is undersized, crushed, or missing a return where one belongs, new equipment cannot force more air through it than the ducts allow. It inherits the restriction, full stop.
Here is the part that surprises people: the old furnace tolerated it. A 1970s furnace ran a fixed-speed blower that pushed hard no matter the resistance, wheezing along for decades on ducts that were never quite right. A modern variable speed blower reads that resistance and responds to it, ramping up, drawing more power, running hotter, and on some systems tripping a limit switch instead of quietly underperforming.
So the room that was always a little off becomes the room that is now unlivable, right after a brand new system went in. That is usually the moment Novus gets the call, and it is almost never a defective unit.

Optimization is not a cleaning, and it is not a full teardown. It means measuring the system first, then changing exactly what the measurement says needs to change. On a typical job that looks like:

Which column a house lands in depends entirely on what the measurement shows, not on which service sounds more thorough. A house with one starved bedroom and an otherwise sound duct system needs a return added and a run resized. It does not need a teardown.

Static pressure is the blood pressure of a duct system: the resistance the blower has to push against to move air through the house. It is measured in inches of water column, and most residential equipment is rated for a total external static pressure around 0.5 inches. That number is printed on a sticker inside the equipment cabinet, and almost nobody has ever read it.
We measure it with a manometer at the supply and return plenums during the diagnostic visit. On a healthy system the reading sits near that 0.5 rating. On plenty of the systems we test, it reads well above it, sometimes close to double, which is the duct equivalent of a blood pressure number a doctor would not let you walk out of the office on.
High static pressure does more than starve one bedroom. It shortens the life of the blower motor, drives up electric use, and on some systems trips safety limits that shut the whole unit down mid-cycle. ENERGY STAR puts typical duct losses at 20 to 30 percent of the air moving through a system, and a real chunk of that is restriction like this, not just leaks.
Two patterns show up constantly in Monmouth County, and they look nothing alike. The first is the 1960s and 1970s ranch or split level across Freehold Township and Howell, where the furnace has been replaced once, sometimes twice, and the ductwork underneath the house has never been touched since. Each new unit inherited whatever the original contractor sized decades ago, often for a house since finished in the basement or added onto.
The second pattern is newer. Larger developments in Marlboro and Colts Neck were built with long duct runs feeding bedrooms at the far end of the house, and those far rooms starve first. The branch to the last bedroom is the longest run with the most elbows, so it is first to lose pressure when static climbs anywhere upstream of it.
Different decades, different builders, same result: a room that never gets what the thermostat thinks it is delivering.
Almost always a redesign, not a replacement. Full replacement means opening ceilings or running new chases through finished space, and it is priced accordingly. A redesign works with the ductwork already accessible and changes only what the measurement flags: a resized trunk here, an added return there, a section of crushed flex swapped out.
This is also where money gets wasted before Novus ever sees the house. A homeowner gets quoted a bigger furnace or AC to push more air into a room that is not getting enough, rather than a Manual J load calculation that would show the duct system, not the equipment, is what is undersized. More air forced through the same restricted duct raises static pressure further, exactly backward. The ACCA publishes Manual D, the industry standard for sizing and laying out ductwork, precisely because this mistake is common and expensive.
Redesign is almost always the cheaper path, supported by what a duct leakage test and a static pressure reading actually show, not by which system has the bigger nameplate.
The diagnostic visit is $150, up to $200 on a harder call, and it includes the static pressure and airflow measurement, not just a walkthrough. We check total external static pressure against the equipment's rating, read supply and return CFM at each register, and inspect accessible duct runs for crushed sections, missing insulation, and obviously undersized branches.
From there we tell you exactly what needs to change and price it before any work starts. Most jobs come back to a handful of changes: an added or enlarged return, a resized trunk section, a rerouted run with fewer elbows, or a register swap. A full air balancing pass often follows the physical changes, because moving dampers and adjusting registers is how the fix gets tuned room by room once the ductwork can actually deliver the air in the first place.
Four show up over and over in Monmouth County houses. Undersized returns are the most common by a wide margin, because return air is the half of the system nobody thinks about until static pressure is already high. After that: flex duct run crushed, kinked, or slack instead of pulled tight, which quietly strangles a branch. Too many elbows stacked close together coming off the air handler. And rooms with a supply but no return path, so closing the door pressurizes the room and the air stops moving. All four are measurable rather than matters of opinion, which is why we start with a static pressure reading instead of a look.
Leave at least two feet of straight duct between a takeoff, transition, elbow or register and the next fitting. Air coming out of a fitting is turbulent, and dropping a second fitting into that turbulence costs you pressure and airflow and is what makes a register whistle or rumble. It is a best practice rather than a code requirement, and it is one of the first things we look for when a branch is starving: three fittings crammed together within a foot of the air handler will strangle a run no matter how big the duct is.
