
Once a year for a gas furnace, and the reason has almost nothing to do with your utility bill. A technician has to physically inspect the heat exchanger, the burners and the venting for damage nobody can see from the outside, and a crack in that box can leak carbon monoxide into your home with almost no warning. Efficiency is the argument every HVAC company leads with, because it sounds like the tune up will pay for itself. Combustion safety is the argument that is actually true, and it should be the one that gets you to book.
A gas furnace burns fuel inside a sealed metal box called the heat exchanger, the wall of metal that keeps the flame and combustion gases separated from the air that blows through your ducts and into your bedrooms. That wall corrodes and cracks slowly, from the inside, somewhere nobody can see without pulling the burners and running a combustion analyzer. A crack lets carbon monoxide bleed into the airstream, and carbon monoxide has no smell and gives almost no early warning beyond a headache people blame on being tired. The EPA is direct about it: central air handling systems, including furnaces, flues and chimneys, should be inspected annually, and even a newer furnace can corrode enough to leak.
That is the whole case for once a year. Not comfort. Not the bill. A furnace nobody has opened in twelve months is a furnace nobody has confirmed is safe to run.
Efficiency does move a little with a clean furnace, but it is a side benefit, not the main one. Poor airflow alone can cut system efficiency by up to 15 percent according to ENERGY STAR, and most of that loss traces back to a filter nobody changed. Treating that as the headline reason for a visit is how the whole industry ends up sounding like a sales pitch instead of a safety check.

A twenty minute filter swap and a glance at the cabinet is not a check-up. It is a filter change with a truck roll attached, and it is what most discount tune up specials actually deliver. Four measurements do the real work. Static pressure, the resistance the blower fights pushing air through your ducts, tells us whether the duct system itself is choking the equipment. Temperature rise, the gap between the air going in and the air coming out, has to land inside the manufacturer's spec or the furnace is running too hot or too cold for its design. Gas pressure at the manifold has to sit at the number stamped on the rating plate, because too high or too low both cause problems that look identical from the thermostat. Combustion analysis reads the exhaust itself, carbon monoxide, oxygen and efficiency, the direct proof of whether the burn is clean.

Past a certain age, yes, and the case for twice a year gets stronger. A furnace running fifteen years or older has an ignitor, a flame sensor and a heat exchanger that have logged a lot more cycles, and those parts fail faster once they start. The 1960s and 1970s ranches and split levels across Freehold Township and Howell are the clearest version of this: most have had one equipment replacement, so the current furnace is itself well into its own service years.
A heat pump changes the math. It runs both the cooling season and the heating season, logging close to double the hours of a furnace that only fires from late fall through early spring. Twice a year keeps pace with that duty cycle instead of asking one visit to catch a full year of wear.
Sometimes, and it is worth saying plainly when it does not. If you reliably book a fall check-up on your own every year at the standard rate, a plan mostly buys convenience and priority scheduling during the first cold snap, not real savings, because you were already doing the thing the plan exists to guarantee.
Where it earns its cost is with people who put it off. The main reason is combustion safety, not efficiency. A technician has to inspect the heat exchanger, burners and venting for cracks or corrosion that leak carbon monoxide, damage that is invisible without opening the unit and testing it. Efficiency gains from a clean filter are real but secondary, worth a few percent rather than a transformed bill.
Short cycling, a burner flame that looks yellow and lazy rather than crisp and blue, more dust than usual around the supply registers, and a furnace that takes longer to come up to temperature than it used to. A filter that looks grey after a month is the easiest tell. Most of what actually needs cleaning inside a furnace, the flame sensor and the burners, is not visible without opening the unit, which is the whole reason the annual visit exists.
